Teachers Unions and Tenure
Teachers Unions and Tenures is somewhat of a tough topic for teachers. It definitely is hard for me, because if I am the teacher that leaves a school based on this someday I would feel very lost in what my teaching future would hold. I think that each year it should be required for a teacher to change their teaching styles and try new lesson plans for each subject. I remember in school the grade above me would tell me a lot of the things they did in a classroom before I was even in that particular teachers class. If a teacher just keeps the same stuff, students could get bored with the same things. Part of being a teacher is being flexible with students, and if a teacher is not willing to learn new things than they should not be a teacher. I think that having reforms would be a very big advantage for the teachers to-be. New teachers are very beneficial because of all the new education techniques they learn and the added bonus of knowing all about the latest technology. Having new teachers come into a school is very exciting for students because it is great to see how each teacher is different. I have experienced old teachers showing how they are sometimes "sick" of their jobs and they often look forward to summer. Therefore, new teachers would show enthusiasm and excitement from the start.

Although I disagree with you that teachers should change their teaching styles, I do think that they need to reflect on lesson plans and make changes. I also do not think that every year they should get "new" teachers, and get rid of the "old" teachers. One day, I will be an old teacher, and I'd hope that I would not be replaced by someone that may know more about newest technology.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you in that many times, teachers do the same lessons each year because I have experienced that, as well. As a teacher, I feel that would get old teaching the same lessons over and over for years. After a while, the lessons will need to be tweaked in one way or another so students are still learning the things that will make them successful.
ReplyDeleteI think you brought up some good points. I think that the learning style of the class as a whole should determine how a lesson should be taught. If the class seems to lean towards learning better with hands-on activities, then the teacher should plan his/her lesson accordingly. Same for any other type of learning style. Teachers should be flexible in their teaching methods and be understanding of students learning styles and multiple intelligences, but unfortunately sometimes routine gets in the way and some teachers are not open to new ideas.
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more with your post! Teacher reforms are a good thing because it gives students new experiences and having new teachers is never a bad thing. I always thought that having a new teacher was fun because they had a whole new style of learning to bring into the school. All the teachers that I had growing up are still teaching in the same place that they were when I had them and whenever I would get a new teacher I saw it as an adventure. I am not saying that all old teachers are bad, and all new teachers are good because I have had one in particular really horrible new teacher and she showed me a lot about what kind of teacher I will not be!
ReplyDeleteI think that if a teaching style works, the teacher should stick with it; however, lesson plans need to be changed up from year to year. This could involved making whole new lesson plans, or just making adjustments on old lesson plans to make them better and fir the current class. Teachers need to keep up the with the times and spend their summers at workshops and taking classes so that they aren't replaced by new teachers. Once I become a teacher, I want it to be my job until I am ready for retirement and I would be devastated if I got replaced by a teacher fresh out of college just because I stopped taking classes and trying to improve my teaching methods.
